Why Everyone Should Think Like a Scientist | MAPS Team | TEDxMahtomedi

Which do you think would be more difficult: presenting research at a major national scientific conference or talking about it to the local school board? After discovering that the real challenge was getting nonscientists to engage with their work, this This Modeling a Protein Story (MAPS) high school team set out on a new quest — to encourage the rest of us to recognize the role of science in each of our lives and actively engage with science just as we do with news and sports.
These members of the Mahtomedi High School Modeling A Protein Story (MAPS) team researched a protein and compiled a professional poster that was presented at the national Experimental Biology conference in April. All are interested in pursuing a science career, and MAPS team offered an opportunity for them to explore these interests. Ruby Ales is involved in the National Honor Society and likes to spend her free time outside. She would like to study biochemistry or molecular biology and eventually earn a higher degree in science. Her favorite field of study outside of life sciences is math. Mary Edmunds is involved in sports and Interact club and hopes to have a career in environmental policy and management. Ava Schimnowski enjoys running cross country, track, and Nordic skiing. She is interested in studying environmental biology at a university. Alyne Torenvliet is planning to major in biochemistry and pursue a career in the medical field. She is involved in three sports at the high school as well as a community service club and National Honor Society.
